Classics and popular novels come to life in the SJHS Book Club. Students discuss literary elements, opinions and feelings and incorporate films based on the novels as a method of comparing and contrasting. The Book Club is open to all students interested in reading mature literature.

Robotics and Fuzzy Logics Club members learn how to build robots with their peers while applying logic puzzles and games to the programming of robots. Outreach activities include visits to elementary schools to share robotics projects and special events where members compete using their own robots.

Sponsored by the NYU-Polytechnic’s Society of Hispanic Engineers the SJHS chapter removes educational barriers and encourages students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Math studies and careers. Students learn about the college application process and financial aid. Members also network with professionals and attend university tours. The society is open to all students of all nationalities and backgrounds.

The Spanish Club meets once a month and welcomes all who are interested in learning about Spanish culture. Members visit museums, theaters and Spanish restaurants.

Students watch Japanese animation, experience Japanese language and culture and learn how to draw in anime and manga styles. Activities include special events, games, discussions and field trips.

The City Explorers love adventure and travel to places around the city including museums, art galleries, gardens, aquariums, zoos and interesting neighborhoods. Students navigate the city on foot and by subway and enjoy the culture of New York City!

The Culture Club experiences various cultural and fun-filled events in New York City, including Broadway and off-Broadway theaters, museums, ice skating and bowling. Funded by a special grant, the Culture Club is available and affordable to all students who can become official “club member” by going on at least four trips during one school year.

Students choreograph and perform a variety of dance styles at gatherings and celebrations including the Dance Workshop Day at Long Island University C.W. Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.

Led by a professional theater and musical director, Mr. Ethan Schlesser, students learn acting, singing and improvisational skills for all levels. Weekly practice includes theater exercises, games and skits. Small productions for the public are performed throughout the year in preparation for a major musical in the spring.

The SJHS Band includes students, faculty and staff who gather to play all types of music together throughout the school year.

The SJHS Speech Team placed third in New York State, and in the top five nationally in 2015! The Speech Team offers opportunities to compete in Oral Interpretation, Duo, Drama & Original Oratory. Students practice during free time and attend Saturday competitions.

The Step Team placed first and won the CHSGAA championship in 2009, 2011 and 2013 and has consistently been awarded the Spirit Award. Step is a form of percussive dance through which the entire body becomes an instrument, producing rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word and hand claps. Step performs at basketball games and other school functions, and enters the CHSGAA competition every April.

A member of the Catholic High School Girls Athletic Association, the Basketball Teams play on the varsity and junior varsity levels. The teams enjoy a partnership with St. Francis College, where they practice and play home games.

A member of the Catholic High School Girls Athletic Association, the softball team plays on junior varsity level. Home games are played locally at Commodore Barry Park or McLaughlin Park.

A member of the Catholic High School Athletic Association, the Track and Field Team meets twice a week at the Brooklyn Bridge, the Cadman Plaza Park, the school’s fitness room, The Brooklyn Promenade and Tillary Park. During the winter, the team meets at the YMCA gym to perfect skills in jogging, power walking, weight training, Zumba fitness and proper daily nutrition. The team competes at the Colgate Games for Women.

Like the basketball and softball teams, the intramural volleyball team practices and plays at St. Francis College.

Part social justice club and part culinary arts workshop, the cooking club teaches food preparation and cooking while having fun and helping the community. Twice a month, students plan and prepare meals for each other, faculty and staff. Students also participate in food justice activities and events and is also active with Food Bank NYC, Midnight Run and Good Food Jobs.

SJHS students join other Congregation of St. Joseph high schools to reflect on their shared mission of inclusive love, unity and reconciliation. Members serve on committees to assist with “mission-based” activities that reach out to the larger school population, such as Freshman Orientation, Community Service Projects or Open House.

The Environmental Action Team makes our planet a healthier place for all living things. Partnering with the Alliance for Climate Education and Greenpeace, students raise awareness and combat current environmental issues including climate change, pollution, sustainable energy and animal endangerment.

Together with coordinators from ECPAT (End Child Prostitution and Trafficking), students raise awareness of domestic and international human trafficking. Activities include creating online petitions to support legislation to assist trafficked victims. Victims of trafficking have been invited to share their stories with students to increase awareness of this worldwide problem.

Girls for Christ better known as “GFC” experiences God in a contemporary, fun way encourages young women to expand their relationship with God, beyond organized religion. Activities include games, discussion, prayer and outdoor events. It is a Sisterhood that is truly “Real Girls for a Real God!”

Glamour Gals visit nursing homes to provide complimentary beauty makeovers and companionship to women living in senior homes. We visit Cobble Hill nursing home once a month to keep the elderly company, provide makeup applications and manicures.

The Library Club is an integral part of the Media Center operations. Students use one unscheduled period each week to learn about the important role of technology in the Media Center.

St. Joseph’s award-winning school newspaper features a broad range of content including school news; student and class profiles; city, national and world news; photography; artwork; creative writing; advice columns, and more. Writers, photographers, poets and artists are all welcome!

Student Leadership Council is made up of the leaders of the four houses: Brentwood, Carondelet, Le Puy and Lyon. Council members are selected annually by their peers for fostering school spirit and displaying leadership and concern for others. Membership requires purpose, responsibility and availability. Activities range from ‘school spirit activities’ and fundraisers to liaising with the school administration on behalf of the student body. Elections for freshman class leadership take place in January.
