“The future belongs to those who believe
in the beauty of their dreams.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt
Dear Parent and Student:
For over a century, St Joseph High School has been providing a nurturing and spiritual educational
experience to the diverse population of young women here in Brooklyn. The Board of Trustees, along
with school leadership, faculty and staff, have proudly served with the Sisters of Saint Joseph in their
mission.
As with many private, religious schools in the country, St Joseph High School continues to face declining
enrollment and increasing expenses, to the point where projected operating costs far exceed all
anticipated income.
After a thorough examination of options, the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Board of Trustees have made
the painful decision that the upcoming 2019-2020 school year will be the final year for St Joseph High
School.
The Board of Trustees worked tirelessly with the Sisters of Saint Joseph on a feasibility study to explore
scenarios which would allow for continued operation of SJHS beyond the 2019-20 school year.
However, the painful reality is that long-term operation under these financial conditions would diminish
our ability to deliver the type of innovative, inclusive education we have always striven to provide.
School administrators and advisors will work closely with each student and their families during the
coming year to identify transfer opportunities for the classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023. We understand
the uncertainty this announcement is likely to cause, and more information on options beyond the
2019-20 year will be forthcoming as it becomes available. We are grateful for your understanding at this
difficult time.
Sincerely,
The Sisters of St. Joseph & Board of Trustees, St Joseph High School
