SJHS Runners Finish Impressive Year

The St. Joseph High School Cross Country and Track & Field teams have completed a year filled with impressive wins, record times and even a nationally ranked runner, Alanni Cannon. For a team that has been around only a few seasons so far, it is very exciting to see our young runners making such big strides!

Most recently, on May 26th at the CHSAA Varsity Intersectional City Championships, the team placed 1st in the Freshman Girls Sprint Medley Relay event, with Jourdan Garnett, T’Kirah Beckles, Isabelle Johnson and Alanni Cannon running. This win is the first team City Championship medal in SJHS Track & Field history!

Looking back over the year, this past Cross Country season our freshwomen placed 2nd overall in the Brooklyn-Queens Championships. Team member Jourdan Garnett qualified for the State Federation Meet and placed 2nd in the Brooklyn-Queens Championships and Alanni Cannon placed first.

A fantastic first year for Jourdan Garnett!

Alanni Cannon: We Can’t Wait to See Where She Will Go!

Cannon at the Bishop Loughlin Invitational – finished 1st in the 600m and ran a meet record in the 300m

Freshwoman Alanni Cannon (“the Cannon”) has had an amazing first year on the team. During the Indoor Track & Field Season, she won both the 600m and 300m at the Bishop Loughlin Games and set a meet record for the freshmen division. Going on to win the 600m at the Brooklyn-Queens Championships and placed 2nd in the 600m for City Championships, she also qualified for the State Federation Meet, and she qualified for Nationals in the 400m. Ultimately she was ranked #1 in the State of New York for the 400m out of all freshmen.

The year ended with Outdoor Track & Field. Jourdan Garnett returned to meets after an injury kept her off her feet throughout the indoor season, going on to place 2nd in the 1500m and 3rd in the 800m at the Brooklyn-Queens Championships. Alanni continued her winning streak, placing 2nd in the 800m at the Brooklyn-Queens Championships, and 2nd overall in both the Brooklyn-Queens Championships and the Freshmen/Sophomore Championships. Freshwomen T’Kirah Beckles, Isabelle Johnson, and Anyah Ramasar also all had a strong freshmen campaign and they were the catalyst for the team placing 2nd in the Freshmen/Sophomore Brooklyn-Queens Championships.

Coaches Akil St. Louis and Mary Gallagher proud of their team

All are invited to join the St. Joseph High School Athletics Department on September 28th for a celebration at the Dyker Beach Golf Course, where we will be honoring Genelle Sonson, who ran her senior year for Coach Akil St. Louis, and this year was able to walk onto the St. Peter’s University Track & Field team, making her the first D1 Track Runner in our school’s history! Check out the invitation below and contact Coach Mike Toro ([email protected]) for more information.
